Biography

  • Back in 1972, he started a (very) local radio station and became a DJ at the age of 11, but beatmixing wasn't invented back then so he merely announced the songs and played them like regular Radio-DJs did. He even produced some of his own jingles... He was inspired by the offshore pirate stations like Radio Veronica and Radio Noordzee.
  • In the years 1974/1975 he became a steady listener of the Ferry Maat Soul Show, this way he became familiar with quot;import music". He started mixing way back in the early 80's, maybe '81, he really doesn't remember that exactly. He was influenced by the music that Ferry Maat played in the Soul Show like US-import, Mixes from DiscoNet or DMC and the "Bond van Doorstarters".
  • Starting somewhere in 1982, he often mixed dance-songs in both live as well as recorded radio shows for local (Pirate) radio stations. He also did some mixing in several discotheques, and entered a couple of mixing contests organised by discotheques and radio-stations.
  • In 1983, Radio Veronica organised the "Nationale Thuismix Kampoenschappen". He decided to send in a mix, which had to last no longer than 5 minutes. That was a difficult task for me, since he was used to making long live mixes of one hour. Nevertheless, out of over 100 participants, together with 9 other mixes his mix came into the final round. All in all, he finished in 4th position although the professional jury, consisting of Lex Harding, Adje Bouwman and preceded by Ben Liebrand, rated his mix #1 ;-)
  • Starting on april 2nd, 1983, Ben Liebrands In The Mix (almost) weekly show that aired on Radio Veronica's "Oh wat een Nacht" on Dutch Public Radio 2 did inspire him a lot. At that time he had been doing a weekly hour-show "The American Disco Express" on a local pirate station, he gradually began playing more and more songs "In the Mix" during the coarse of that radio show. He continued making non-stop mixes and presenting dance-oriented radio shows, like the Dutch "Disco Dance Top 100", on a regular basis until the end of 1988, with the "Disco Dance Top '88 presented in BPM-sort order" as one of his last live shows for a local pirate station.
  • After a certain moment around 1989, his life changed a lot. He got interested in other things, left his elderly home and started living together with his girlfriend, he got an other job, his dad died (too soon) and he picked other hobbies which also took their share of spare time, so he did no longer make mixes on a regular basis. But he still kept interested in listening to mixes, like for example Ben Liebrand's Grandmixes that aired until 1992, and, the yearmixes produced by mixers like Martin Boer and others.
  • More recently (in 1997) he restarted this hobby, being influenced by his younger cousin Perry who had also become a DJ and musician. Sometimes he practised in his studio using his turntables and his records (which were mostly club/trance 12"es), and then he sometimes recorded these trial-mixes on MD (some of them can be found on this <a href="http://www.dj-ed.net">page</a>).
  • His latest mixing experience is with mixing with MP3 tracks on the PC using multiple instances of WinAmp (with the Pitchfork plugin) and MP3's. This may sound silly, but he likes this way of mixing because of the highly accurate result of beatmixing: Once you have set the exact pitchcombination and cueposition, and have practiced in accurate mouseclick-timing for pressing the "play-start" button, the result is always good and stays good, now, tomorrow, next week, whenever..
  • It's also an affordable way of mixing for a beginner, due to the fact that you don't need two good turntables (like SL1200's) to mix in this way (his old gear from the 80's has run a bit worn out over the years), although the feeling you get with the vinyl's when mixing with real 'wheels of steel' is unreplaceable.
  • By the way: It appears that some of today's so called "Live mixed DJ sets" that are out on CD's actually have been made in some recording studio on multitrack (harddisk) recording equipment and have been edited/corrected afterwards. Ed believes this is cheating: mixing live is something done in real-time and inaccuracies in mixing belong to live mixing and should not be edited out or redone later on.

  • Zodoende de beide tracks maar eens in Ableton Live geladen en wat zitten goochelen met loops, volumes en wat effecten.

BVD 1014 I started making this mix, especially for the BvD (Bond van Doorstarters) a couple of weeks after the Soul Show went back on air on Radio Veronica. During the first episode on september 6th 2003, Ferry called for new BvD-mix contributions, and by this my mind was triggered with the wish to make a mix for Bond van Doorstarters and finally get the honour of being aired as BvD-mixer number 1014.
  • FYI: I've been a Soul-Show listener from the early years: As far as I can remember, I started listening in 1973 when de Soul-Show was aired on RNI (Radio Noordzee Internationaal). Later on, in 1975 or 76?, the Ferry Maat Soul-show moved to TROS radio on Hilversum-3 and later on he started broadcasting mixes occasionally and eventually that became a weekly item now known as BvD. Back then I never considered making a mix for BvD, because I was not confident that the kind of mixes that I made back then (I used to make long non-stop Dj sets of one hour or more, which I did almost weekly for local pirate radio station) would be appreciated to broadcast as a BvD mix.
  • Anyway, so I've worked on making this BvD mix several evenings/nights starting near the end of september, through beginning of october (2003). I've used CD-rips of most tracks contained in the mix and (as usual) I made the mix entirely in Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 4.0 (which can be used perfectly also for audio-only projects).
  • On october 5th, I felt that the mix was well enough finished and sent an email with a preview of the mix to the address of the SoulShow and the next day I got a reply from the producer that they asked me to send them the Mix on CD for airplay.
  • I've tried to make a BvD mix with a selection of my all-time favourite Disco Classics tracks. Not an easy task as there have been soooo many good tracks from that period. As always in my mixes, I've tried to make a nice composition of mixed tracks that Musically match well by keys as well as tempo, and some tracks run together very long, smoothly mashed-up with other pieces like acapella's. Needless to say, many many edits were made on the tracks (in Vegas) to correct the beat-timing variations of these old disco classics tracks.

Janet Jackson vs Change All For You / The Glow of Love Introduction: When I first heard the new track "All For You" by Miss Jackson, sometime near the end of march 2001, immediately this thought came to my mind: Where have I heard that backing-track/loop before? Yes, it's from a song by one of my all-time favourite 80's dance groups: Change. After locating the Change album in my collection, and listening to the track "The Glow Of Love" I got this idea: I'm gonna make a combimix of this original track and the new song by Miss Jackson. So the first two weeks of april 2001, during some of my spare time, I started working on it, and here is the final result. Please pay special attention to the break around 2:55, it has some nice stereo effects (play it on your headphones!)

  • Janet Jackson - All For You (videomix, CDS)
  • Change - The Glow Of Love (1981, album version from the CD "Collection" 1986 )
  • some vocal samples from older Janet Jackson material.
  • Tools used:
  • Plextools for Digital Audio Extraction of the CD tracks that were used. Mixed in Vegas Audio v2.0. Prosoniq EZTimestretch, for timestretching Janet's track upto 119bpm. Lame v3.88 alpha, for MP3 encoding
  • This combimix was played several times on Radio 3FM by Patrick Kicken and Edwin Diergaarde in the "Interactive Cyber Top 50". The radio-debut was on Easter sunday (april 15th 2001), and the following weeks it was played again at least 5 times on 3FM (that I know of). Even though the presenter (Patrick Kicken) did not mention the maker's name, it made me very proud that my remix was received so well and got much positive feedback.(04:23)

DJ Ed - World Trip mix 1 (extended version A 21 minutes Trance trip, compiled and mixed by Ed from 7 recent hot trance-tracks. Ed started working on "World Trip" on the 19th of april 2000 and by the 22nd of april 2000 the first version was completed, and put online as an Easter present.
  • On the 26th of april 2000 the mix was extended a bit and the final version is now available on his site.(21:44)

Chase & Enervate just-for-fun combimix This is a combimix that HE made of two tracks: the Jam & Spoon remake of Giorgio Moroder's Chase, and Enervate by Transa.
  • This combimix was made with very minimal equipment: a turntable and a CD-player. It was recorded and mastered on a PC, using SoundForge.
  • The total time he worked on this mix, including mastering it on a CDR and creating an Mpeg-1 Layer 3 file, was just 4 hours.

DJ-Ed's MP3MIX2-99 The second Dance/Clubmix is produced combining different mixing techniques:
  • The first part is made as described above, but the last 3 tracks came from 12" vinyl records that were mixed live by Ed on his Cousin DJ Perry's turntable/mixer-set with 2 SL1200mkII turntables and mixing-panel, and was recorded on MiniDisc.
  • This recording was then converted to a .WAV file by playing back the MD, connected via S/PDIF to the PC-soundcard, and recording with CoolEdit.
  • This mixed WAV-track was then used in the final mixing sequence using WinAmp, using the method described above.(20:54)

DJ-Ed's MP3MIX1-99 A Dance/Club/Trance mix made on the PC by using many instances of WinAmp+Pitchfork-plugin. All tracks came from Mpeg-1 Layer 3 files.
  • Every track was loaded seperately in WinAmp and with the PitchFork plugin, the correct pitch and cuepoint was set-up for each track.
  • When ready with preparation, the complete mix was made "live" by starting each track right on time, and recorded on DAT-tape, connected to S/PDIF coaxial input on the SBLive! soundcard in the PC.
  • After completing the mix, the DAT-machine was played back, again connected via S/PDIF to the soundcard, recording it with CoolEdit on the PC to a 48khz/16bit/stereo WAV file.
  • Finally, the WAV was converted to 128kbit/s Mpeg-1 Layer 3 file, with L3ENC.(34:42)
