I started making this mix, especially for the BvD (Bond van Doorstarters) a couple of weeks after the Soul Show went back on air on Radio Veronica. During the first episode on september 6th 2003, Ferry called for new BvD-mix contributions, and by this my mind was triggered with the wish to make a mix for Bond van Doorstarters and finally get the honour of being aired as BvD-mixer number 1014.

• FYI: I've been a Soul-Show listener from the early years: As far as I can remember, I started listening in 1973 when de Soul-Show was aired on RNI (Radio Noordzee Internationaal). Later on, in 1975 or 76?, the Ferry Maat Soul-show moved to TROS radio on Hilversum-3 and later on he started broadcasting mixes occasionally and eventually that became a weekly item now known as BvD. Back then I never considered making a mix for BvD, because I was not confident that the kind of mixes that I made back then (I used to make long non-stop Dj sets of one hour or more, which I did almost weekly for local pirate radio station) would be appreciated to broadcast as a BvD mix.
• Anyway, so I've worked on making this BvD mix several evenings/nights starting near the end of september, through beginning of october (2003). I've used CD-rips of most tracks contained in the mix and (as usual) I made the mix entirely in Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 4.0 (which can be used perfectly also for audio-only projects).
• On october 5th, I felt that the mix was well enough finished and sent an email with a preview of the mix to the address of the SoulShow and the next day I got a reply from the producer that they asked me to send them the Mix on CD for airplay.
• I've tried to make a BvD mix with a selection of my all-time favourite Disco Classics tracks. Not an easy task as there have been soooo many good tracks from that period. As always in my mixes, I've tried to make a nice composition of mixed tracks that Musically match well by keys as well as tempo, and some tracks run together very long, smoothly mashed-up with other pieces like acapella's. Needless to say, many many edits were made on the tracks (in Vegas) to correct the beat-timing variations of these old disco classics tracks.

• De stijl die ik wilde bereiken was een Ben Liebrand stijl. Een stijl die ook dansbaar is, en wat makkelijker te beluisteren is. Zo start de mix (net als Ben destijds in zijn jaarmix) met een wat langzaam nummer, dan een stukje rap, etc. En ook beats op de ondergrond die over meer nummers doorlopen.
• Overigens vind ik de andere stijl (ik vond toen de BVD stijl) ook geweldig, maar soms wat druk. Niet echt makkelijk in het gehoor, maar vooral technisch, en dus meer voor de liefhebbers. De "twee emmertjes waterhalen" mix is een goed voorbeeld. Geweldige mix, heel veel technische effecten. Echt een mix voor de liefhebber.
• Gebruikte apparatuur:
• Sony bandrecorder , Alecto mengpaneel , Sherwood draaitafels, Technics D-speler
• De duur van de mix is ca. 12 minuten. Er zijn ongeveer 150 plakkertjes gebruikt. Er is ca. 75 uur aan gewerkt. Made in 1990!
• In 1990 heb ik een mix gemaakt, met medewerking van een vriend van me. Ik heb deze mix destijds opgestuurd naar Dancetracks. Toen het Dancetracks-team de mix wilde beluisteren bleek dat het systeem van een bandrecorder in een professionele studio anders was dan wat ik thuis had. Mijn bandrecorder heeft 4 sporen. 2 de éne kant op en 2 de andere. De bandrecorder in de studio had kennelijk 2 sporen één kant op, en gebruikt dus de hele breedte van de tape.Dat was dus een probleem. In de studio hoorde ze mijn "achterkant" van de tape. Ze zouden hem z.s.m. terugsturen, zodat ik de mix op cassette kon zetten. Alleen duurde het jammer genoeg 2 maanden voordat de tape in mijn brievenbus lag. De nummers in de mix waren dus alweer 3, 4 maanden oud. En tsja, dan was zo’n mix niet meer interessant (dacht ik). Ik heb hem dus niet opnieuw ingestuurd. Maar nu wel!
