MINIMIX - 2004

Minimixes are the mixes Ben made from 1983 to 1993 (and again in the new millennium). They are usually mixes of one track and one artist. They have been broadcasted by Radio Veronica on friday evenings. The dates shown are the dates they were broadcasted for the first time. These mixes are in some occassions the same as on the CDSingles Ben remixed/produced. In other occassions they're just 'practice'. Sly & The Family Stone - Dance to the musicDance to the music was a US top 10 hit in 1968, and a few months later a hit in the UK as well.
This minimix takes the original track to a new rhythm, with new drums and bassline. Sections of the mix are filtered as for example the intro. Percussion is added and in the rhythm break the guitars organs and bass solos are replaced by new riffs and sounds. enjoy

Telex  - Moscow discoThe intro train pass-by was recorded by myself using a digital Sony PCM F-1 set somewhere in the mid 80's. Recording a pass-by meant sitting alongside the tracks for 2 hours having an oppertunity to adjust levels every half hour (that's how many trains cam by) untill the batteries ran out. Still I got a decent recording

Ben Liebrand - Music & Passion (Clubmix)This track is inspired by Barry Manilow's Copa Cabana. In order to create this track, only a few vocal lines were used.As the original version did not feature an acappella, these vocal lines needed to be re-recorded. The organ-line was inspired by Morel's grooves
The minimix is disco/club style featuring short guitar riffs and filtered vocal lines. Only a couple of vocal lines where recorded, as most of the track should have a club-style instrumental feel. The vocals where then sampled into the akai s3000, and filtered using the s3000's internal filters. The bassline comes from the Minimoog, a classic amongst synthesizers and still one of the best synths to generate low warm bass sounds.
Vocals by The Gibson Brothers,
Previously broadcasted as 'the Mystery Minimix in 1999. (but in a different version)
Not Released on 14-2-2000 but on 21-2-2000 on CDS

UB 40 - I can't help falling in loveub40.gif (19968 bytes)

Famous for their melancholic reggae tracks, this one is almost a ballad.Taking only a few riffs from the original, this "reggae ballad" is transformed into a jungle track. Jungle was an uptempo wild breakbeat style before the drum & bass era. It was characterized by wild cut-up breakbeats with rough sounds, and anything that would stick to it.  Enjoy this chaotic remix of a UB40 classic.

Alf - Stuck on earthalf.jpeg (5568 bytes)About the original TV show:Alf was a comedy series in the 80's about a creature from the planet Melmac who crashlanded in the garden of an american family. It's favorite food were cats, and it's sense of humor was pretty crude, and basically not from this planet.

For this mix, a couple of episodes were scanned for some great lines, and one of those episodes (season 1.7) even contained a small rap section which of course was perfect to be used in a mix like this one. The mix was broadcast and many people responded to this nutty groove featuring the hairy creature from Melmac. Next step was getting permission to release the mix. For this, all vocal lines, and the spoken texts were traced back to the episodes they came from, and the authors who had written them. New record contracts needed to be created for each and everyone of the authors.

Janet Jackson - Let's wait a whileLet's wait a while is a beautiful balad from Janet's first true solo album " Control". The album was called this, as it was Janet's first album where she was no longer under the influence of her brothers and parents influence. The album was produced by Jam & Lewis in 1986. It featured the Hit singles: Control, Nasty, What have you done for me lately, When I think of you and Pleasure Principle.
The Minimix first of all stretches the original 4:37 to greater length. Drums are added in "Control" style. Small sequencer riffs come in from the second verse along with sampled horn stabs. The mix is then complemented with a wonderful performance on saxophone by Gerbrand Westveen. His sax is blended in with the rest of the mix using the same reverb Jam & Lewis used. Unfortunately Janet's vocals already were rather soft in the original version, and could have been somewhat louder. Well.... Can't win 'em all !

Rob'n Raz - CluphoppingSwemix, which was a swedish kind of DMC, brought some great producers and remixers to the world of dance music. Hits like Robin S received the hit treatment it needed and from that same spot Rob & Raz made their start in dance music. The swedish duo Rob & Raz produced some excellent clubtracks in the 80's amongst which clubhopping is one of the best known.
Starting of with a sample of Grace Jones' Nightclubbing, the track features several pitchtranspose effects, and many additional samples. Enjoy!!

The Meteors - Cha No Yu (Tarzan & Jane)An utterly crazy remix of an utterly crazy track to begin with.
One of the guys behind this track was John Tilly who also engineered all the "Total Touch" hits, and with whom I worked on Forrest - Rock the boat.
The track features rhythm jungle samples as well as the famous tarzan yell.

This is a simple straight forward combination of the tracks above, proving that 1 plus 1 is more than 2

Pia Zadora - Dancing out of my head (Acid Mix)Whilst doing the official remix for this track, it appeared that on the multitrack where also the backing vocals of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis' regular female session singer. These vocals exactly doubled Pia's and in a last minute decision they were put louder and Pia's vocals somewhat softer. When that mix was reviewed, peopel where amazed that Ben Liebrand's remix even got Pia to sing bettere than she did. Now you know why!!(06:38)

Stock Aitken & Waterman - Roadblock (dirty roadblock detour)A production by the hit-team Stock Aitken & Waterman. Recorded as a studio project, with only studio session musicians (who also worked on the other SAW producions) This "let's-do-something-different" production also became a hit despite the fact that it wasn't the regular SAW formula.
The minimix combines Roadblock with a string of other hits, and voice clips from a seventies movie about traffic jams. The SAW projects included in this mix: Princess, Banarama, and several Mel & Kim tracks

Natalie Cole - This will beThis is a remix in the original sense from a recording made in the traditional way. Back then everybody gathered in the studio where in sperate corners and spaces all players and singers where set up with the appropriate mics, including sound barriers between certain instruments to cut back crosstalk between microphones. When the sound from every microphone was checked, the bandleader started a countdown to which everyone started. Such a recording (called "take") was made on anything from a mono recorder (pre-Beatles era) to a 96 channel recording (possible now-a-days). This particular one was recorded on 24 tracks and what you hear in this mix, is a different way of mixing down those original 24 tracks. In some parts, the vocal tracks were muted providing instrumental parts and in other sections instruments where muted to obtain all the bits which were edited together afterwards. In this mix you can also hear the bandleader starting of the whole thing, and commenting at the end.(05:15)

The final result is so mellow, that the x-rated rap in the Ashanti acappella just felt out of place, so Shabba takes the honours for the midsection rap.

Whitney Houston - I will allways love youThe original Version was the titel song for the hit motion picture 'The Bodyguard' ruled the number 1 chart position all over the world for weeks in a row.
This Minimix is one of the most crazy minimixes ever. It takes the original ballad, shreds it to pieces, drops a bucket of synths and a drum and bassstyle breakbeat on it, and spits it out as a complete uptempo rebuild.

Alcazar vs. Chic - My forbidden guaranteeAgain Alcazar takes a danceclassic as the foundation for a their new hit 'Sexual Guarantee. This time it is Chic's Forbidden lover, (special thanks to Frans vd Kamp) a track from the album Dance Dance Dance, that supplies the groove for this disco track.
The minimx completely reunites Chic's Forbidden lover with Alcazar's production of Sexual Guarantee. the track is running more than 12% faster to meet the new musical key, and is timestretched even further to meet the new tempo. This insane high speed however doesn't take long to get used to, and makes it possible to further combine the 2 tracks into a single mix featuring both songs. Filter effects, edits and sound processing further completes this minimix. Enjoy!!

Queen/Genesis - Mama will rock youQueen - We will rock you
Genesis - Mamma
With a little bit of Bohemian Rapsody at the start.
The minimix combines these two tracks as they have the same BPM and partially also the same tonal key. The combination of these 2 rock classics amount s to more then the mere sum of the parts.
The second part of the "we will rock you" chorus is "instrumental" as the keys of the 2 tracks otherwise would clash.
The minimix was originally made in the Akai DD1000. The 2 tracks were loaded from CD and Queen was slightly time-stretched to match the tempo of Genesis' Mamma

The reverb effect of the female vocals starting in the distance and coming up close was also used for the additional sax solos in the beginning en end. The rhythm track gets support from a funkydrummer loop. Suzanne Vega pops by for some vocal bits and one of James Brown's human beatboxers completes this funky walk on the wild side. Faithless & The Prodigy - Bitch as oneWe become one / Smack my bitch up
Sheer coincidence brought the opening track of the "fat of the land" Prodigy album "smack my bitch up" together with Faithless' "Come as One". This minimix introduces a new form of DJ-ing, as it was almost entirely made with the new pioneer CDJ1000 CD players.
All sample style, loop, reverse, backspin and repeating effects were made live with these CD players. The italo mix below was the first mix on this planet to include the CDJ1000, and this mix today is the first mix on radio using 2 of them. So remember where you heard it first !

Harold Faltermeyer - Axel FAxel F stands for Axel Foley. The song was written as a theme for the movie Beverly Hills Cop, and appears whenever the lead character Axel Foley, played by Eddie Murphy comes in to action.
Harold Faltermeyer also worked closely with Giorgio Moroder and has also written filmscores for Running Man and Starlight express. Axel F was number 1 hit in 1985 following the success of the movie.
The Minimix features the original version of Axel F, the rap version, as well as outtakes from the Eddie Murphy One Man Show. It jumps back and forth between these versions and includes some scratches with Eddy Murphy's vocals, as well as street sound effects adding to the melody. This Minimix also dates from 1985

The minimix makes a club/latin combination of these 2 tracks The superb Latin intro continues as a loop once the rhythm is started, and supports "Felix" giving it the latin style. Additional deep bass sequences were added along with some stab-fortifying drum hits. (This latin/club minimix was made approx 5 months before "Give it up" by "the Goodmen").

Raven Maze vs Donna Summer - The real life and I Feel loveI FEEL LIFE
Donna Summer's I feel Love started life as a b-side on a 7"single. Way ahead of it's time it introduced sequencer disco in it's finest form to the dancefloors of the world. Produced by Giorgio Moroder with many more to follow, I feel Love is probably one of the very first trance records ever !!
Donna is joined by Raven Maze's the Real Life, featuring a Queen (is this the real life, from 'Bohemian Rapsody') sample.
The innitial plan was to combine the "Dance Valley 2001 Theme" with 'I feel love', but that simply didn't work. Further investigation however led to this wonderfull combination where 'I feel Love' even transposes to fit the 'chorus' in Raven Maze's track. Enjoy !

Drum Theatre - EldoradoElectric Drum theatre was one of the bands in a wave of rock/dance acts like Duran Duran, Mister Mister and Talk Talk (I sense a pattern here....)
This is one of the early remixes, using the first Akai 612 Sampler to add drum and vocal effects. The phasing choir sounds are actually made by sampling my own voice , and adding effects to this "Aaah" sample Additional drum, sequencer and soundeffects are added with the akai sampler.
This first sampler could record one sample, and had a recording time of less than 1 second. The sequences where played into the step-time sequencer of a Korg poly 800 and synced to the music using a teac 4-track recorder.

Adding a substantial amount of precussion and fills to this track, draws it from it's pop background straight to the dancefloor

Abba - Lay all your love on meAllthough Abba was a group, simply not played in the clubscene,
there was no getting around it after Disconet (a dj remix service
in the late 70's and early 80's) issued a remix that kept dancefloors moving even in the true underground clubs. Abba was suddenly hot on the serious danceclub floors.
Building on a repetitive edit section, this mix is in the spirit of that
Disconet remix, and the brilliant whitelabel pressing mixed by Peter Slaghuis. The Mix was made from a digital copy from the original master, greatly improving on the dynamics of the mix. Phasing effects were re-created in the digital editor using varispeed and offset times between sync running sections. The mix is complemented with an array of 80's samples and sound effects. As disco is hot again, so is Abba ! (preferably the real thing, and not the covered teens stuff).

Jan Hammer - Crockett's theme (II)The original version was one of the theme's from the popular tv-series 'Miami Vice'. It was a theme dedicated to the character Sonny Crockett played by Don Johnson, and appeared in several episodes of the series. The Music is composed and performed by Jan Hammer, who was also responsible for the Miami Vice Theme and all other music specially composed for the series. It took Jan up to one week to prepare the music for an episode, which means that if you have a new episode each week, Miami Vice kept him occupied for years. Crockett's Theme is still one of his favorite tracks.
The minimix is based on a new edit of the original. To this edit, new drums and baselines are added. The famous Miami Vice timbales (percussion) appear and the famous Aahhhh sample does it's bit. In Addition to this, voice clips where taken from some of the episodes, and placed over the complete mix.

Sinead O'Conner vs Guru Josh - Nothing compares 2 YoUr infinityThe original Version was a song by Prince, made into an even bigger hit by Sinead O'Conner. Her famous video, where she cries just that little bit at the right moment, contributing substantually to the succes. Other ingredient is the sax riff from Guru Josh which fit in perfectly on half tempo. Both tracks where at the top of the charts in the spring of 1990.
The Minimix is a more rhythmic and percussive version of the original including bassline and the saxriff from Guru Josh's Infinity. The track starts off with the sax riff, and builds to a triplet feel 6 beat pattern. Guru Josh re-appears half-way the track.

Michael Jackson om MARRS - Pump up the volume/BadToday's minimix is a combination of M/A/R/R/S's Pump up the volume, and Michael Jackson's Bad.
Bad, and Pump up the volume both share the same tempo and key, and that combination was a minimix waiting to happen. Several voice-overs taken from audio test-CD's complements the mix, together with some all-time favorite rap-scratch samples (feel-it)

Jellybean - SidewalktalkBen got his first decent sampler and the world was sure as hell going to know it. :)John 'Jellybean' Benitez

Released in 1984, this track produced by John "Jellybean" Benitez, probably was one of the very first tracks featuring the talents of Madonna. The track is written (and probably also performed) by Madonna, and was made at the start of their musical cooperation which later led to the first true hit "Holiday".
Working from the original the vinyl 12" version, this was the first mix to feature the akai S-612 sampler. With less than second sampling time, this sampler nevertheless was great fun to use, and was even enough to sample all sounds (one at a time) to make the "holiday rap" in 1986. Listening to this mix, you follow Ben's first tryout with the Akai sampler, using looped and reverse sounds, as well as adding the occasional sampled syndrums. This was also one of the 1st minimixes to center around one track, rather then having a megamix style of several songs. (There is a small drop out in one of the channels somewhere in the mix, due to an analog tape edit/dropout. This is due to the fact that the mix was first recorded on to 2-track, then switching to a 4-track tape recorder, erasing the center 2 tracks (track 2 and 3) to ad the sample effects, keeping the outer tracks (1 and 4) playing the stereo edit. All channels where then mixed back into stereo adding some reverb on the sampled sections. Consider the drop out as part of the original "package".
